TOPIC: “How to Close, Transfer, Reconstruct, Transfer Again and Re-open Lithuania’s Main Airport in 35 Days“
From 14th of July to 18th of August 2017, Vilnius Airport was completely closed for reconstruction. Since closing, around 90 percent of all flights were diverted to Kaunas Airport which for 35 high season days became the capital of aviation in Lithuania. The full runway reconstruction at Vilnius Airport and the need for Kaunas Airport to be ready to service 5 times more flights and passengers during the peak summertime brought this project to the highest level of complexity. In this session you will hear how a team of around 100 specialists were working on solving this project’s issues such as developing a temporary infrastructure at Kaunas Airport, moving staff and equipment from Vilnius to Kaunas, managing more than 200 stakeholders and much more.
